GATSBY

Danish / Scottish rock band.

Biography

Gatsby – 25 Years of Melody, Memory, and Momentum
Gatsby’s story began in 1999 with a serendipitous meeting in a smoky Irish pub. Kevin Ian Miller, recently relocated from Scotland to Denmark, was playing a solo gig—just him, a guitar, and a head full of songs. During a break, local drummer Jesper Würtz approached him and asked a simple question: “Need a drummer?” Ten minutes later, Jesper returned with his drum kit, and they jammed on stage like they’d known each other for years.

Jesper soon brought in longtime friend and bassist Morten Sonne, and just like that, Gatsby was born.

The trio quickly recorded an EP and followed it up with their critically acclaimed debut album, Meant to Be, released in 2002. With a Britpop-inspired sound driven by melody, melancholy, and raw energy, the album marked Gatsby as a band with something honest to say—and the musical chops to say it. They played widely across Denmark and began working on a second record. But as life so often does, it intervened. Family responsibilities and professional careers pulled the band in different directions, and the studio went quiet.

Still, Gatsby never truly stopped.

Over the years, the band reunited for occasional shows—each time a spark, a reminder of what was still alive beneath the surface. Then, two decades after it began, Gatsby returned to finish what they had started. How to Hide in Public was released: an album blending unreleased early material with new songs born of reflection, resilience, and the unbroken thread of friendship.

In 2023, Gatsby turned up the voltage. Seasonal Changes in a Mundane World introduced a harder-edged, electro-rock sound—pulsing, angular, and urgent. The following year, Empathy for the Dead pushed the emotional and sonic boundaries even further, cementing Gatsby as a band unafraid to evolve.

That same year, the lineup expanded with the addition of Anders Overgaard, a gifted guitarist whose experience and expressive style brought new dimension to the band’s sound. With Anders onboard, Gatsby’s live energy reached a new high—textured, full-bodied, and utterly captivating.

Now, in 2025, Gatsby are recording their fifth album. It’s a return to roots—not in retreat, but in rediscovery. The new material combines the melodic sensibility of their earliest work with the seasoned edge of a band that’s lived, paused, grown, and come back stronger.

This is more than a band. It’s a story about friendship, time, and the power of unfinished songs finally finding their voice.
